Locally the population of
homeless animals is increasing due to favorable circumstances,
such as the increase of tourism (food source) and a lack of
education about the proper handling of animals.
The result is that many people have a negative
opinion toward the Island due to animal sicknesses and suffering.
The Animal Protection
Association, "Pro Animal Gomera" (PAG) was founded in
April of 2003 and is now a member of F. E. C. A. P. A. P.
(Federacion Canaria De Asociaciones Protectores De Animales Y
Plantas) in order to implement a method of population control and
stop the suffering of feral, abandoned and otherwise homeless dogs
and cats on the Island of La Gomera. Since PAG was formed,
they have established the following major objectives:::
-
The
capture, neutering / spaying, and return of feral cats (TNR).
-
Provide
help to sick animals in cooperation and coordination with the
local veterinarians.
The
establishment and construction of an Animal Shelter to service
the entire Island.
Establishment
of good relations with the local authorities such as to
enforce existing
Animal Protection laws.
Establish
an education program for the school system to train the
younger generation the proper care and handling of animals.
In
addition, we have developed a strategy to re-home those animals
especially in need to new homes both on the Island and abroad.
We
are also working in close cooperation with the Förderverein Animal La
Gomera (FALG), a German Animal Association, which is dedicated to
provide us economic and moral support.
Prior to the above date there was no organization committed to the
welfare of animals on the Island other than for Whales, Dolphins
and Lizards. PAG, being the only Animal Protection
Association dedicated to the welfare of dogs and cats, provides a central location for
assistance and advice. At present we are small but aggressive in the
matter of Animal Protection. We are committed to the above
objectives and, as we grow, will be able to be more successful in
achieving them.
