An association proposes that the government build an animal shelter!!!

The Animal Protection Association, "Pro Animal Gomera" has made it their work to see to it that an Animal Shelter is built on the Island.  For years this group has been trying to educate the local population on the importance of sterilization of animals, but this education needs official help.

The speaker of the Association, Loli Herrea, stated, that daily, on the island, many abandoned dogs and dying cats could be seen.  These animals are seen on those same paths used by visitors to see the beauty of the island.  She also stated, "these hikers are the ones who bring the animals to the Organization."

The Association is based in Valle Gran Rey and has accumulated more than five years of experience.

Pro Animal Gomera works on finding local "Foster Homes" where the animals can be placed, cared for and brought back to good health.  When the animal is healthy, they are prepared for adoption in Germany.

Since 2002, this group has been collecting signatures indicating the need for a shelter.  The speaker went on to say that the most important thing is the collaboration of the administration.  In this sense the work of the mayor of San Sebastian, Angel Luis Castilla, is spectacular, because he gave 10.000 Euros for the castration of female cats.

Antonio Javier Trujillo, the advisor of the Medio Ambiente del Cabildo of the Island of La Gomera,  has already met a few times with the Association.  He suggested that all of the communities of the Island must be in agreement in order to find a solution.

Loli Herera critisized that the Cabildo chairman, Damimior Curbelo, apparently never heard of this suggestion and on the subject of Animal Protection, you can not bridle a horse from the rear.  She further stated that € 900,000 were given over for the protection of the Giant Lizards, while dogs and cats are dying on the streets.
