These two
Boxer puppies were found alone in the mountains
by a couple from Tenerife. The police found out
very quickly who the
owner was and he was subsequently charged with dog
abandonment. After being treated by
the local vet (one was sick) we were able to rehome
both of them. Meanwhile,
the original owner was taken to court and was fined approximately 400€.
Once again the lack of education and
the fact that this island still does not
have an Animal Shelter meant that two innocent
creatures could have died in the middle of nowhere. These two were lucky but who
knows how many other animals have been abandoned and
how many people knew of this unacceptable practice and actually supported it
by saying nothing.
Please help us
help them. Inform families, friends and neighbors that
abandoning animals is not the solution, is considered
cruel and could lead to heavy fines. After all there are laws against such conduct, and as we
have stated before the local
governments and courts are starting to take an
interest in protecting the animals of this Island. Inform them, as we do, that
sterilization, over time is one of the better solutions. Pressure your
local government officials, as we do, for an Animal Shelter for the Island
where animal owners may go and receive information and assistance in the
handling of their animals.
Tourists, if, during your visit to
the Island, you find this situation or any other like it, please report it
to the "Guardia Civil", or the "Seprona" (Nature Police) at "062" or
the local Ayuntamiento (city government) or, failing that, then let us know
through our contact number.
