During the afternoon of 15 May, the
secretary of Pro Animal Gomera (PAG) was alerted that abandoned dogs
had been found at the “Ermita de Las Nieves” (Chapel in the Snow)
located approximately 15 km West of San Sebastian on the way to Valle Gran Rey. The pictures show one female “Bardino” (or what’s left of a
Bardino) with her two puppies along with another female of mixed
breed.

The mother dog and her approximately
one month old babies had been starved as one can see in the pictures.
The mother dog was somewhat nervous and shy, but refused to leave the
puppies. Both puppies had been injured in the head and the wounds
had become infected. We presume that somebody may have tried to
stun or kill the puppies by hitting them on the head. Naturally,
we don’t know for sure, but the wounds looked very suspicious.

The other dog was tied with a chain,
presumably so that she could not follow the car that left her. This
dog was very friendly and loved to be petted.
For awhile, all dogs were left at the
chapel with food and water. They could not be immediately
removed because there was no place to bring them. Again, NO
SHELTER!!!
However, the local Ayuntamiento as well as the Seprona
(the Nature Police) had been properly notified and since, under the
law, the Ayuntamiento is responsible to handle such problems, we are expecting a better solution soon.
As of this writing, the
dogs have been placed in temporary care and all are doing well.
